devlog #2 (28.12.2022) - The Minotaur

<< Previous Devlog                  Next Devlog >>

Is it weird that I said I'm looking for work in the last log?  I guess it's not very likely that a potential recruiter is gonna be reading a random devlog on a random Pico-8 game on itch.io... but I am a bit desperate right now! Haha. I graduated from university last year, which is not that long ago. But it sure feels like most of my friends already have their shit sorted out with their nice consulting jobs or PHD programs. Meanwhile, I'm doing... whatever it is that I'm doing right now. I'm kind of getting by picking up freelancing gigs here and there (not just game dev, some web and illustration stuff too) but I haven't been able to score anything long term, and having to constantly look for the next client is not super fun. My current visa situation is also kind of shaky and I really don't wanna go home. But things could always look up, right? I'm still applying to stuff, and people seem to be generally impressed with my profile, so I'm sure I'll find something good soon :)

Anyway! I made quite a few changes in the game. Here they are summarized:

- Moving spikes! The sound effect that they make when they activate is different from when they turn off and it's louder when you're close to them, so you can try to avoid them even in the dark.

- The Minotaur is here! He follows you around when you find him. There's a way to defeat him which I hope you'll find for yourself but <spoiler>essentially you just have to make him walk onto moving spikes</spoiler>.

- I changed the structure of the levels. There's only one entrance now, and you cannot leave until you defeat the Minotaur, who is located in a big room in the middle of the level. Actually, you can leave once you encounter him without killing him, but that will trigger a game over. The level gets bigger every time you complete one.

- Ariadne's thread now appears on top of the darkness, so after you defeat the Minotaur, you can leave the maze even if your candle runs out.

- I got rid of the music for now since it clashed with the sound effects. I'll try to come up with a different one soon.

As always, let me know what you think and what kind of changes you'd like to see implemented! One of my friends said he'd like the ability to tether the thread to a spot so I might try to do that next.
